The Boca Juniors Football Council has confirmed the continuation of Fernando Gago as the team's coach, following the recent elimination in the Copa Libertadores on penalties against Alianza Lima. Gago will lead the team in the next match against Rosario Central at La Bombonera for the eighth round of Zone A of the 2025 Apertura Tournament.
In a meeting with president Juan Román Riquelme, Gago expressed feeling "whole and strong" to continue at the helm of Xeneize, which ensured him support for his continuity, though subject to future results. Riquelme also met with Marcelo Delgado and Alfredo Cascini to analyze what happened in the last elimination.
The coach was informed that his stay would be subject to the team's performance in the local tournament and will be constantly evaluated. In case of a dismissal, the Football Council has already considered alternatives to Gago, who is contracted until December 2026. If results do not improve, it is expected that Gago will decide to resign.
On the other hand, Gago's coaching staff does not contemplate the possibility of his resignation. In the face of continuous poor results, Boca Juniors management's first option is to appoint Mariano Herrón as interim coach before seeking a permanent replacement. Among the possible candidates is Rubén Darío Insúa, the current coach of Barracas Central.
